Debra Lins
Ni hao! My name is Debra Lins. I have come to work with Principal Qin as an International Principal. It is a pleasure to join the staff, students and parents of the Wuhan Optical Valley Weiming Experimental School. I served as a principal and curriculum coordinator of an elementary school, as well as at a learning academy for middle and high schools students for three years. Prior to that, I worked as the Associate Principal of the high school in the same community for three years. In addition, I have served for 14 years as a school counselor helping facilitate student success. My teaching experience includes serving as a college instructor where I taught psychology & sociology courses and professional development courses to educators. I earned my Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science Degrees from the University of Wisconsin. My second Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership is from Cardinal Stritch University, also in Wisconsin. It is an honor to live and work in Wuhan to ensure that all students can experience success in their future and embrace a global view of our world.

Manny Machado
Hello! My name is Manny Machado. I am from San Diego, California. I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. I also acquired a TEFL degree from the American Language Institute at SDSU. Prior to coming to China, I was a writing tutor and teacher for ESL students from a multitude of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
I love teaching children because they will change our world. Although, they seem immune to our consultations, they’re quite aware what they’re going through. I’ll be there to help them face the strange and ensure they become better individuals. It is important that my children know that they are not just another brick in the wall.

Lucas Kemper
Hello! My name is Lucas Kemper. I am from San Diego, California, America. I attended University of California, Berkeley, and double-majored in geography and rhetoric. I gained a bachelor’s degree from my university, and then a TEFL/TESOL certification. While attending university, I was a high school and middle school tutor for all general education subjects, including the Spanish language.
Children represent the potential of a country, so educating them means cultivating the future of the world. I enjoy being a part of this process of cultivation, because I would like to help in the creation of an open and tolerant global environment. Writing and speaking in English has always been a specialty of mine – I love my native language. Developing a bilingual generation of Chinese students is both an exciting and difficult task, but I intend to work hard to accomplish my goals of offering my students an international education.

Marissa Schapman
Hello！My name is Marissa Schapman. I am from Memphis, Michigan, USA. I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. This is my second time in China; the other time was two years ago after my sister moved to Wuhan. I enjoy teaching in general, but my favorite thing about it is getting to interact with the students. I love getting to know them on a personal level. I like to create things, I like new experiences, and I like to make things fun!
I'm very happy to be working at Weiming. I'm excited to help the students learn about English and the American culture through having fun with games and activities. Keeping the students active and involved in their lessons is the key to their developing the English language. I am thrilled with how much they have already learned since I have arrived, and I have learned so much from them. I am looking forward to continuing to watch the students grow throughout the school year.

Matthew Felty
Hi, my name is Matt Felty and I’m from Chicago, Illinois, USA. I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign where I majored in economics and minored in Chinese and education. During my summer breaks I was a tutor and substitute teacher for various subjects at my old elementary school. Learning foreign languages and cultures has always been a passion of mine, and I’m excited to be a teacher in these subjects now.
I have always enjoyed teaching and building relationships with the students, and it has been my goal to have a positive impact in their lives. I feel that learning about western culture and the English language definitely opens the door to a lot of opportunities which can have a beneficial and lifelong impact on the students, especially in a world that is increasingly globalizing. It is my hope that my teaching will allow students achieve any goal that they may have, and I’m looking forward to learning just as much from the students as they will from me.
