December 23, 2013 Flag Ceremony:Christmas in America,
By Principal Xiao Zhang Lins
Children in North America, especially in the northern part where I am from, wish for a white Christmas. A Christmas doesn’t seem complete without a fresh coat of white snow.
When the snow falls, children can’t wait to get outside to play in the snow. They make snowmen, snow forts, and angels in the snow. Raise your hand if you have ever made a snowman? How about a snow fort? How about a snow angel?
We put our Christmas tree up and decorate it right after Thanksgiving, and we send Christmas cards to our friends and family to let them know that we are blessed to have them in our lives. We go shopping and buy presents for our close friends and family, wrap them and put them under the Christmas tree. Children write a letter to Santa Clause asking him for the presents they want most. Moms and grandmas often bake many kinds of Christmas cookies, sweets and fudge.
On Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas, we hang our stockings for extra presents or treats, and crawl into bed, so excited that Santa is going to come tonight and bring us presents. It is very hard to fall asleep tonight, because we hope to hear Santa and his reindeer stopping on our rooftop.
On Christmas morning, the kids are usually awake very early, and sneak down and peek at the Christmas tree. If they were good boys and girls, then Santa came during the night and left presents! If they were not good that year, Santa leaves a piece of coal in their stocking.
Soon everyone in the house is up and caught up in the excitement of the children as they discover the presents under the tree. The family will then open presents from Santa and from each other. Then they have breakfast, go to church for a special Christmas service, with Christmas songs like Silent Night, Go Tell It on the Mountain, Hark the Herald Angels Sing. And Angels We Have Heard on High.
Most families in America, if they live close enough, will then travel to one set of grandparents house first and then to the other one, to open presents, and have Christmas lunch at one house, and Christmas dinner at the other one. Finally, on Christmas night, everyone packs all their goodies in the car along with sleepy children and drive home.
Children typically have 1-2 weeks of vacation from school at Christmas time. We call this the winter break. During this time, we visit with friends and family, play, watch movies, put puzzles together, and eat all kinds of Christmas goodies.
For me, what is so special about Christmas is everyone being kind , loving and friendly to one another. I think that everyday should be like that.
Thank you for letting me share my American Christmas with you.
